Peer evaluation with disparate evaluators. Cartography and action of the evaluation committees in the process of scientific categorization of university teachers in Argentina

   In the argentine scientific-university field, the (e)valuation of people, institutions and scientific productions is traditionally associated with the process of “peer review”, which implies a complex judgment of scientific merits prepared by prominent academics, generally registered, in a disciplinary field of training and/or related work specialty. On this basis, economic resources and/or various symbolic credentials are generally assigned, both at the collective level (via accreditation of projects and research funds) and individually (through an additional to the teaching salary for I+D tasks, obtaining scientific categories, allowing for the training of human resources, etc.). Focusing on the “Program of Incentives for Teachers-Researchers” of the National Universities, which involves a complex process of evaluation and national “categorization” of the university teachers, this article examine the conformation and functioning of the Evaluation Committees involved, describing the evaluation scenarios, socio-demographic and academic profiles of the specialists convened, as well as the evaluative practices deployed.
