Participatory projects and heritage, the construction of collective memory and neighborhood identity: the case of the Community Launderette in Belgrano

We understand that exists certain adversities for projects that propose the work of preserve and make visible the tangible heritage. However, certain interest is also observed from public policies, the private sector, universities, organizations and individuals that wish to become involved in this matter. Our work focuses on the concept of the social use of heritage to analyse the relationship that societies develop with heritage objects according to their interests, knowledge and objectives. In this case, the work with the community laundrette in the Belgrano neighbourhood of Eldorado can be understood as an example of the participatory paradigm. We also develop arguments about how heritage conservation is a primordial element in the construction of a collective memory and community identity in the frame of participatory projects.
