Ethnic claim or political struggle: two interpretations about contemporary Zapatismo
This essay analyzes a representative sample of what could well be called interpretations around contemporary Zapatismo and, especially, about the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional. (EZLN). Such interpretations can be understood framed in two different conceptions. One of them, supported by a multiculturalist perspective, emphasizes cultural aspects and conceptions based on ethnic differentiation. The other one, proposes an integrating reading of the political struggle developed in Chiapas and its articulation with the global antisystemic movement. According to this second approach, it is also possible to identify the territorial dimension as a concrete element of political disputes in Latin America.
